Mr. Colbert earned a Bachelor of Music degree from the New England Conservatory of Music in Boston, MA where he studied with the legendary clarinetist Harold Wright, former principal clarinetist with the Boston Symphony Orchestra. Subsequent study was with Robert Genovese (National Symphony Orchestra), Anthony Gigliotti (Philadelphia Orchestra) and Master Classes with Marcel Moyse. Graduate studies were taken at Virginia Commonwealth University, Richmond, VA.
Mr. Colbert has served as principal clarinetist with the Prince William Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Orchestra, Richmond Symphony Chamber Players, Richmond, VA., Newton Symphony Orchestra, Newton, MA., Virginia Reed Trio, Richmond Symphony Woodwind Quintet, Richmond, and Classical Inventions, Manassas, VA. He performed the Mozart Clarinet Concerto with the Indianapolis Symphony Orchestra, Indianapolis, IN., and the Prince William Symphony Orchestra. He has also been featured in performances of the Mozart Symphonia Concertante with the Prince William Symphony Orchestra and Virginia Commonwealth University Orchestra and wsa featured in The Brahms Clarinet Trio and Dvorak at the Claremont Music Festival, Pomona, CA.
For the past 20 years, Mr. Colbert's students have consistently achieved highest honors in annual solo and ensemble contests, All District, All County and All State Band, University and Conservatory music programs. His previous teaching positions include adjunct instructor of clarinet with Boston, MA. public schools, Portsmouth, New Hampshire public schools, Virginia Commonwealth University, University of Richmond, University of Virginia, and Brown University.
My goal in teaching is to provide a structured program that addresses individual student's needs. As the student progresses we see them gain confidence. The focus is teaching musical skills that contribute to a lifetime of music making. It is my great pleasure to see my students enjoyment as they strive to accomplish their musical goals.
